On a visit to the Anti-Fracking Camp in Borras with local councillor Jim Kelly, Lib Dem Assembly Member Aled Roberts called on the Welsh Government to take a more proactive stance against fracking.

“The time has come for the Welsh Government to acknowledge the environmental harm posed by fracking and take a more proactive stance against it,” commented North Wales’ Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, Aled Roberts.

“There are clear environmental concerns which the anti-fracking camp is highlighting and, judging by the support they are receiving, are shared by a majority of local residents.

“The Welsh Government should be putting Wales at the forefront when it comes to dealing with what is essentially an experimental energy source.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats have passed policy which calls on the Welsh Government to issue a new planning Technical Advice Note (TAN) to set out the environmental and health standards expected of fracking operations. Where these standards are not met planning authorities should reject applications for fracking operations.

“The environmental price paid in other countries abroad has been too great and we should be making sure that the same mistake is not made in Wales.”

In welcoming the visit by by Aled Roberts AM and Cllr Jim Kelly one of the camp residents, Chrissie, commented on the strength of feeling in Borras.

“We’ve had wonderful support from the local community for the Borras Community Protection Camp against Fracking,” said Chrissie.

“It was a local initiative to set up the camp and our slogan is ‘Fracking is stoppable and another world possible.’”

“We are calling for an end to all drilling for fracking in Wales – wherever the frackers go, we will be there.”
