Flying Start must focus on outcomes – Aled Roberts AM

"Whilst the fact that more young children are in receipt of Flying Start services can be seen as a benefit, I believe we should be concentrating more on outcomes for those children."

Commenting on this week’s Written Statement on Flying Start, the Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member for North Wales and the Party’s Spokesperson on Children and Young People, Aled Roberts said:

“Whilst the fact that more young children are in receipt of Flying Start services can be seen as a benefit, I believe we should be concentrating more on outcomes for those children.

“There is still a postcode lottery in place for Flying Start and it can’t be right that a child in one street in a town is eligible for support but a child in similar circumstances in a nearby street that is outside a designated Flying Start area of deprivation is not.

“There are also inconsistencies in provision across Wales and although the Minister’s Statement celebrates increases in take-up and in immunisation rates, it fails to point out that there was a fall in the percentage of children assessed at age 2 that either reached or exceeded their developmental milestones as well as a fall in the percentage of children assessed at age 3 that either reached or exceeded their developmental milestones.

“There is clearly more work to be done to ensure that all disadvantaged youngsters are given the support they need to reach their full potential.”
